Clearview Township general manager of transportation Steve Sage estimates that last Monday’s torrential downpour caused about $100,000 worth of damages to the municipality’s roads and infrastructure.

The worst damage by far, he said, was to the section of Nottawasaga Concession 6 that extends south from Riverside Drive. That road, which is summer-use only, was still closed at the Echo’s press time on Thursday.

Other roads that were washed out to varying degrees, including sections of Riverside Drive, the intersection of Nottawasaga Concession 5 and 6/7 Sideroad and the corner where Caroline Street West becomes Concession 5, were cleaned up and repaired over the course of Tuesday.

In Clearview, Sage said, extreme rainfall was limited to an area stretching from New Lowell in the east to Glen Huron in the west, with the north and south boundaries being just one either side of Creemore. Stayner and Nottawa, for instance, received hardly any rain at all.

As for the areas that experienced overland flooding, Sage blamed the resulting damage more on debris than on the flowing water.

“The rain came down so hard that there was a lot of debris,” he said. “That’s what caused us the real grief, when the debris clogged culverts and ditches.”

With three storm events in the past week, Sage said the Township is not out of the woods yet.

“The ground is so saturated at this point, any more rain is likely to cause more problems,” he said.
