Clearview firefighters rescued a man Tuesday when his arm became caught in the transmission of a tractor.

When his arm became trapped, the man was able to use his cell phone to call for help.

“Fortunately the man was able to alert his family via cell phone that he had close to him,” said Fire Chief Colin Shewell.

Emergency crews were called to the Clearview Township farm at about 3:50 p.m.

Upon arrival, fire crews stabilized the tractor using a block and brace. They were able to dismantle the tractor and split the front and the rear components apart to gain access to the transmission. Crews were then able to access more components of the transmission and remove the forearm of the individual, said Shewell.

“This process was guided by the patient that was conscious and alert along with the help from his son, both individuals are very familiar with the tractor,” he said.

The extrication took about 50 minutes.

As a precaution, ORNGE air ambulance was called but was cancelled on route.

The man was assessed on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital by ambulance.

‘This is a serious reminder that when working alone or outside on a recreational activity, always have a cell phone nearby and let someone know where you are at all time,” said Shewell.
