Coming into the make and break months of the North Dufferin Baseball League (NDBL), New Lowell Knights lead the 14-team senior league and surprisingly, the two Creemore teams are doing ok.

New Lowell, 14-2-3, is duking it out with the Aurora Jays and Clearview Orioles for top spot, although fourth place and defending league champion Ivy Leafs is always dangerous.

The Jays, 12-3-0, have played two fewer games than the Knights and the Orioles, 11-5-1, are not far behind. Gasp, that’s not a lot of breathing space from first to third. Ivy is 9-4-1.

New Lowell beat the last place Nobleton Cornhuskers 6-0 Thursday, and continued their winning way with a 10-2 over Orangeville, 5-6-2, Saturday. Sean Connor and Todd Gowan each hit two-run homers in the Orangeville game. Gowan also pitched a beauty allowing just one hit.

Brad Grieveson, who was raised in Creemore, is the Leafs pitcher and probably the league’s best pitcher. He has won that award many times in the NDBL. Not to mention a resume that lists he is an alumnus of the Barrie Bay Cats and won a U.S. college world series.

On Friday, the Leafs and Orioles met with Grieveson in the slot for the pitching assignment. He pitched the seven innings striking out 16 in a 5-4 Ivy win.

Despite Creemore’s Gowan Memorial Park housing two senior teams and one junior team, the clubs have decent records; the Braves are 5-8-2 and the Barons boast better numbers, 8-7-0. Neither team can come close to matching the Creemore Junior Barons, who are perched majestically on top of the junior league with an enviable 10-2 record.

Sunday the Braves played a double header against the 6-7-0 Barrie Angels getting blasted in the opener 12-0 but put things together in the second tying the score 6-6 before it was called after five innings because of rain. Ethan Henry pitched the game for the Braves as well as hit a three-run homer.

The home run was Henry’s third in three games. On June 24, Henry cranked two balls out of the park for five RBIs in their 11-3 win over the Mansfield Cubs who are playing at a .500 pace with a 7-7-0 record. Ty Linger smacked a solo shot for Mansfield. Brett Trott earned the win.

Creemore Barons news is that they are hosting a golf tournament July 25 at Bear Creek Golf Club. It’s a four-man scramble. Cost is $100. Contact any Baron is you are interested.

Note: the annual all-star games in the North Dufferin Baseball League are set for Saturday, July 4 at Midland’s Tiffin Park with many local ball players competing.

The first game between the East and West divisions on the senior side starts at 1 p.m., followed by the junior game between the Crushers and the Slammers at 4 p.m.
