Clearview Township is hosting the seventh annual Georgian Bay Reads this month when representative from five area libraries will champion their literary choices.
At the event, held at Station on the Green in Creemore on Saturday, Oct. 24, Beth Crawley, representing Clearview, defends Unless by Carol Shields, Ian Adams, representing Wasaga Beach, defends No Relation by Terry Fallis, Cindy Lou LeDrew, representing Meaford, defends The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay, Susie Saunderson, representing Collingwood, defends Still Life by Louise Penny and Linda Collins, representing Springwater, defends Emancipation Day by Wayne Grady.
The showdown will be moderated by Lorraine Gruzuk, who won last year, on behalf of Wasaga Beach.
During this lively two-hour debate, said Michele McKenzie, of Clearview Public Library, the moderator gives set questions and time frames to each defender who has to impress the audience with their knowledge and ability to convey these thoughts in a timely manner with bells clanging if the allotted time is exceeded. With each round of questions, a defender is eliminated until the winner of the highly prestigious Georgian Bay Reads shale trophy is determined.
The audience is encouraged to read the books and cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award.
“Enjoy lively interaction with other like-minded bibliophiles who enjoy the power of a good story,” said McKenzie. “Please join us next Saturday night as we celebrate and discover the merits of wonderful story-telling in these five good Canadian reads.”
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be door prizes and complimentary appetizers and samples of Creemore Springs beer will be served at intermission. There is no cost of admission but tickets are required for entry. Tickets are available at the Creemore branch of the Clearview Public Library or by calling 705-466-3011.
The event coincides with Ontario Public Library week. For more information, visit georgianbayreads.ca.
