The process and timing for choosing a new Conservative Party leader is yet to be determined but Simcoe-Grey MP Kellie Leitch says she is giving it serious consideration.

Her name has been included by many in the national media when speculating about who would play the role of Leader of the Opposition and lead the party into the next election.

“It’s a process and I am quite flattered and humbled that people are putting my name forward. I am giving serious consideration to what is best for the Conservative Party in Canada in the future and what kind of role that I can play in that process. I am giving it serious consideration,” Leitch told The Echo.

“I care a lot about the country and that’s why I have been involved in the political process since I was a teenager. I joined the Conservative movement in this country when I was 14, the youngest age you are allowed to have a membership, and I also care a lot about the Conservative Party. Many party members at every level are giving serious consideration to the future of the party and the future of the country and for me that is also something very top of mind. The other thing I can assure you of is that I am going to remain focused and have been focused on what I have been elected to do which is serve the people of Simcoe-Grey.”

The party is working to choose an interim leader and decide how to select a permanent leader. The Conservative national council is setting up a committee to run a leadership process but the newly passed Reform Act may change the process. Members will have to vote on whether to follow the Conservative constitution or the Reform Act. Under the constitution senators, who are appointed, not elected, would get a vote. They are excluded from the vote under the Reform Act.

“We’ll see what comes of it. I think there will be more to say on it as time goes on,” said Leitch. “We are in the very early stages. The national party executive needs to get their house in order before anything will be moving forward and that will set the timeline in process for selecting the new leadership.”
