The Niagara Escarpment Commission has endorsed a list of potential additions, increasing its protected area by 23 per cent.

Clearview and Mulmur Townships are among those impacted by the proposed changes. The NEC is eyeing almost 14,000 acres in Mulmur, including parts of Mansfield, and 10,655 acres in Clearview. Mulmur Mayor Paul Mills said the township is calling a meeting next month to discuss the possible changes with those affected.

He said the additions could curtail development and have a tax impact.

Both Simcoe and Dufferin county seats on the commission are currently vacant.

The NEC is an agency of Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and works on behalf of the people of Ontario to preserve the Niagara Escarpment as a continuous natural landscape – a vital corridor of green space through south-central Ontario.
