Editor:

It is unfortunate that the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) does not respect the recommendation of its own staff in regards to a permit to upgrade 26/27 Sideroad.

I gather they deem the road not “essential use”.

Closing of County Road 91 in relation to the quarry expansion is a sound decision. With closure, Sideroad 26/27 definitely fits the category of “essential use”. It would allow Osprey Township residents adequate access to the Collingwood area.

Closure would reduce noise pollution for residents such as myself who live adjacent to the roadway. Believe me, motorcycles on a Sunday afternoon are far more annoying than slow moving loaded trucks.

The quarry has a lifetime of 30 years. With 91 closed, the public is left with a lake surrounded by a considerable amount of conservation land for their enjoyment. I gather the NEC would prefer two lakes with heavy road traffic down the middle.

It is important to take a long-term view of the situation.

There have been several deputations against providing a permit. These deputations are provided by individuals who are not permanent residents and are self-centered in their thinking.

I would agree with Richard Cornell regarding the possibility of runaway trucks. This could be solved by provision of a run out just west of Duntroon where land is available.

Bill Franks,

Duntroon.
