The Creemore Angels are braving the Coldest Night of the Year in order to help Home Horizon provide safe warm housing for women and children in transition.

A group of local people is taking part in the national walk being held in Collingwood on Feb. 20 to raise money for the hungry, homeless and hurting in more than 100 communities across Canada.

Locally, proceeds from the event are going to Collingwood based Home Horizon Transitional Support Program, which aims to transform the lives of homeless women and children through support, counselling and housing.

Team captain Lorna May is inviting people to join in the walk and donate to the cause.

May said in her role as pastor at St. Luke’s Anglican Church she is frequently made aware of people in situations where they struggle to maintain housing, especially with added heating costs in the wintertime.

She hopes people from the Creemore area will join her team and have fun while making a statement against homelessness.

“They have marshals and it’s very well lit and everyone gets a map. Everybody kind of walks together,” said May. “It’s very controlled and very safe, for anyone who is concerned. Even if you are by yourself, there will be lots of people walking with you, walking en masse.”

The walk begins and ends at Trinity United Church, located at 140 Maple Street, Collingwood on Saturday, Feb. 20. Registration begins at 4 p.m. The opening ceremonies start at 5 p.m. and the walk begins afterwards.

A warm, light meal will be served to all walkers and volunteers between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
