Editor:

I have lately taken a more skeptical view to the media, I often fact check reports and find that those reportedly in the know play loose with the facts. When I saw the letter “Chicken Little Forecast” by Bill Jeffery it struck me as not right so after a bit of a research sure enough he was incorrect. There have been several accidents involving wind turbines and aircraft, most notably May 2014, four people were killed when their light plan hit a wind turbine in South Dakota, approaching to land at an uncontrolled airport similar to Collingwood Regional Airport and Clearview Aerodrome and a crop duster was killed in Oklahoma also in 2014, and there are other numerous reported near misses.

To Jeffery’s point, yes the number of aviation incidents is small and that’s because, unlike WPD Fairview turbine project in close proximity to Collingwood Airport and immediately on top of Clearview Aerodrome, historically investors don’t locate wind turbines near airports.

Canada is the only jurisdiction in the world that has not adopted ICAO turbine setback of four kilometres from an aerodrome.
