Speeding has been an issue at town hall as of late but it is not a new concern.

Residents looking to preserve their neighbourhood’s quality of life and keep people safe have been campaigning for traffic calming measures and lower speed limits. Both Creemore and New Lowell residents have been in the news recently, asking for additional stop signs as a way of slowing traffic.

As a result, the municipality has launched a traffic survey.

Realizing that this is a concern for all residents, council and staff are doing a township wide assessment of traffic concerns.

The Creemore delegation that has petitioned council for traffic calming measures is urging people to take advantage of the opportunity provided to have their say and make their opinions known.

It’s true. Council and staff have heard concerns coming from the community and have gone to the effort of seeking public input.

The online survey will close on Friday, Sept. 30. Hard copies of the survey are also available at town hall is Stayner and at all three branches of the Clearview Public Library, where there are also computers that can be accessed to fill out the online version.

As the township points out, the survey addresses municipal roads (there is about 529 km of roads in Clearview Township (450 km in rural areas and 79 km in urban areas).

The township does not have any authority over speed limits on the many county roads that run through our communities, or provincial highways.

They also say there is more opportunity to implement traffic calming measures on so-called local roads than those classified as collector or arterial roads by the Township’s Official Plan. (Provincial highways and arterial roads are intended to carry large volumes of through traffic. Collector roads are intended to carry moderate volumes of traffic between highways and arterial and local roads. Local roads are intended to carry low volumes of traffic and provide access to abutting property. Provincial highways and arterial roads shall have priority over collector and local roads. Collector roads shall have priority over local roads in terms of access restrictions, road improvements, intersection improvements and maintenance.)

If the topics of speeding, pedestrian safety, share-the-road or any other issues where vehicular traffic is a factor, is of interest to you, go online and fill out the survey. It will be used to gauge an appropriate response and could have tangible results, such as speed bumps, stop signs, radar signs and additional stop signs. Obviously speed is a township wide concern so in the meantime we should all take care to drive carefully through communities, even when we are away from home. In an ideal world everyone would drive as though they were in their own neighbourhood.
