Simcoe County council has acclaimed Penetanguishene Mayor Gerry Marshall to a second term as warden for the County of Simcoe.

“Simcoe County is one of the best places to live in the world and I am truly honoured to serve another two years as Warden,” said Marshall. “I am proud of our collective achievements over the past two years and I look forward to continuing to work with council and county staff to enhance our services and programs, increase provincial and federal advocacy efforts and make responsible investments in our future.”

Marshall has served on county council since 2010. This is Marshall’s second consecutive term serving as Warden, having been elected for the 2015 and 2016 term. 

The inauguration took place Dec. 13 at the county offices in Midhurst.

County council also re-elected Essa Township Mayor Terry Dowdall as Simcoe County deputy warden for 2017 and 2018. Dowdall has served on county council since 2003. This is Dowdall’s second consecutive term as deputy warden.  

Additionally, the county’s business section chairs and vice chairs for 2017 and 2018 were elected Tuesday: Councillor Basil Clarke, business section chair of performance management; Councillor Judith Cox, business section chair of human services; and Councillor Doug Little, business section chair of corporate services.

Councillor Harry Hughes, business section vice chair of performance management; Steffen Walma, business section vice chair of human services; and Councillor George Cornell, business section vice chair of corporate services.

On Dec. 8, Township of Melancthon Mayor Darren White was acclaimed to the position of Dufferin County Warden.

In his address following his acclamation, White spoke of poverty reduction strategies, soaring Hydro rates, economic development initiatives and greater collaboration between the county and the member municipalities.

As chief executive officer of a municipality, the head of council shall, uphold and promote the purposes of the municipality; promote public involvement in the municipality’s activities; act as the representative of the municipality both within and outside the municipality, and promote the municipality locally, nationally and internationally; and participate in and foster activities that enhance the economic, social and environmental well-being of the municipality and its residents.
