Editor:
I am a great believer in being a rational optimist and seizing opportunities in challenging situations.
The TD Bank closure was a great disappointment for Creemore (pop. 1,127) and the surrounding area. The building has now been empty for over a year, with another vacated business across the street – a sign of the times with online business and big box stores.
However, two residents of the community have seized the day to turn adversity into a positive change for the village. They approached the bank to secure the donation of the building and lands for community use. Experienced real estate and businessmen debated various options, including Mr. Vorstermans’ submission, for use of the land and building for the best business and growth opportunities for Creemore. The community was asked for their input during the town hall meetings and by written submissions.
What if the bank land had been available when the Station on the Green was built? Would the Horticultural Park have a bigger presence on Mill Street at that time?
What if no one incorporated the Creemore Community Foundation, with a mandate to invest into the cultural, economic and physical landscape of Creemore with no cost to Clearview taxpayers?
What if the Build Committee wasn’t open minded about finding the best landscape design option for Creemore, by seeking leading Canadian recognized design firms with experience in town centre design? Their design will be influenced by local input and skills.
What if the designs were not being shown to the public for their comments and input before the final design decision is made?
What if all the community didn’t share in the desire for better village life, culture and business? The weekenders, retirees and new residents and visitors all want to support the local community and businesses.
To be clear, committee members were selected to represent all aspects of the local community life. When the time comes to support the funding of the Foundation, all donors will be simply community residents and local businesses; there are no mystery city donors as Mr. Vorstermans refers to.
Let’s work together as rational optimists and build on our community strengths to enhance this village with a heart by creating a true heart on Mill Street.
