Editor:
During this Covid-19 pandemic I have followed the rules as best I can and only shop when absolutely necessary. So on Wed. May 6, I made my trip to Foodland in Creemore to pick up some much needed groceries. As I sat in my car at the front door, I couldn’t help but notice an employee sanitizing the cart handles when the customers were finished with them. I also noticed that customers were returning their carts with garbage… empty pop cans, dirty wipes and gloves. How disgusting is that?
As I entered the store, I realized before this pandemic happened, this employee used to cut my deli meats, on my usual Thursday shopping day, but today was stationed at the front door.
There were three customers ahead of me. The first was a man wearing a face mask and plastic face shield. She kindly asked him to please sanitize his hands and he grumbled, “I did them before I left home.” The employee explained it was for the protection of the staff arid customers. The second person, wearing knit winter gloves, grumbled and said, “I only wear them when I go shopping” and the third said, “ I don’t see why, I just had a shower before I came.” Really? The employee should not have to explain the reason to each customer, we all know why. When it was my turn, she didn’t have to explain to me. I felt it a privilege to have this sanitize station provided.
With the long weekend coming up, I’m sure the store is going to be busy. So please, all I ask is please, sanitize your hands, it’s provided for a reason. Don’t leave garbage in your carts, it’s yours to deal with, not theirs. And please show some respect and kindness to the staff, they are only following the rules, for the health and safety of their staff and for us, their customers.
Kudos to Foodland and my deli clerk, I look forward to your service in the deli when this pandemic is finally over.
Lillian Bagley,
Creemore.
