With the adoption of a terms of reference, Clearview council has set in motion the process for establishing a Climate Action Advisory Committee.
As a result of Monday’s decision, staff has been directed to begin the recruitment process for volunteer members.
The striking of the committee stems from a motion by former councillor Doug McKechnie with encouragement from residents of his ward, which was passed by council in 2022 but was delayed until the completion of the municipality’s review of its Strategic Plan. During public consultation, the community rallied to communicate that climate action should be a priority.
“I was pleased that council unanimously supported the Climate Action Advisory Committee (CAAC) terms of reference report as presented by the CAO,” said McKechnie, who was present in council chambers for the vote, along with supporters. “The CAAC will be tasked with making recommendations to council on affordable programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I encourage anyone interested in sitting on the committee, especially the young people in the community, to step forward and consider taking on this crucial responsibility.”
In addition to the reduction of greenhouse gases, the committee will have input on how to improve the community’s preparedness for sudden weather events.
The committee will have six members, plus one council representative, in keeping with the township’s rules maxing out committees at seven members.
CAO John Ferguson has proposed that the new Economic Development Officer, who has yet to be hired, be the staff liaison.
Council will review applications and make the appointments.
