Clearview Township staff has been instructed to prepare a motion establishing a community safety zone around Centennial Park on Brock Street in Stayner.
In a presentation to council, Brock Street resident Wayne Weatherall said he has a bird’s eye view of the curve on Brock Street, and has witnessed many near-misses involving vehicles and pedestrians.
“People are driving too fast around that curve and they’re going to kill somebody one of these days.” Weatherall says the park draws kids from all over town, and the road is a favourite route for students walking to Stayner Collegiate.
The problem has gotten worse since the road was resurfaced, he noted, “That new pavement is attracting lots of skateboarders.”
Weatherall presented a petition with more than 100 signatures asking for a reduction in the speed limits on Brock and Elm Streets. He noted that there are currently no speed signs, nor warnings of the upcoming curve in that area.
Councillor John Broderick introduced a notice of motion to establish a community safety zone around the park and to reduce the speed limit to 40 km per hour on Brock Street from Highway 26 to Elm Street, and on Elm Street 350 metres north from Brock Street. The motion will be voted on at the July 22 meeting of Clearview Council.
Public Works Director Dan Perreault advised that once the motion is passed, staff can begin the process of installing new signage. He estimates that process can be complete by August.
