For almost 20 years the village of Creemore has celebrated the apple harvest with a good old fashioned pie contest.

Pie mavens and newbies young and old have put their family pastry recipes to the test at the charming event. The contest has gone through many iterations but has endured and is this year presented by the team at The Creemore Echo.

The contest will be part of the Harvest Fest at Creemore Village Green on Oct. 12, in partnership with the Creemore Farmers’ Market.

Apple pies must be submitted to the Creemore Apple Pie Contest booth between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Judging will commence at 10 a.m. sharp.

We have recruited a slate of pie makers extraordinaire to judge entries based on flavour, appearance, crust and texture.

Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third place and those in attendance will have a chance to sample the entries when the pies are sliced up after the judging and handed out in exchange for donations to St. Luke’s Community Food Bank.

The community is invited to gather round for the nail-biting announcement of the winners at 10:30 a.m.

The contest will wrap up in time to catch the Toronto and North York Hunt’s Horse and Hound parade at 11 a.m. The parade finishes at the Gordon Feed & Seed lot in the centre of town, directly across from Foodland. Spectators are invited to come by the lot after the parade to admire the horses, pet the hounds and meet the riders.

After the parade there will be an opportunity for people to put their savoury culinary skills to the test for the chili contest. Entries will be accepted throughout the morning and it will be served after the parade.

Harvest Fest activities will also include games and activities, tarot card readings, musical washboard workshop, arts and crafts, stilt performers, and wagon rides from noon.

The Vaudevillian, a 1930s Jugband Ragtime Blues band, will be performing on the Village Green stage at 12:30 p.m.

The Creemore Horticultural Society will be on site for their annual flower pumpkin sale, a fundraiser for the public garden beds they maintain.
